Professor Michael Ferry is an internationally recognised research leader in the field of physical metallurgy, with specific expertise in microstructure and texture evolution during solidification, solid state phase transformations, and the deformation and annealing of alloys and their composites.
He has published over 275 journal and conference papers, more than 10 book chapters, and a single-authored monograph. His academic career has been closely intertwined with the industry sector, resulting in the consistent production of high-quality, industry-relevant outcomes alongside significant fundamental contributions. After several years working in industry as a metallurgical engineer, Michael has held academic positions in materials science and engineering at the University of Wollongong (1996–99) and UNSW Sydney (2000–present), as well as visiting academic positions in the UK, France, China, and Singapore.
From 2005 to 2014, Professor Ferry served as Deputy Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals. He has been Head of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at UNSW Sydney since 2019.
