This project aims to develop an advanced aluminum-ion battery technology with low cost, high energy density and improved operation safety, for large-scale renewable energy storage. Advanced battery systems are critical for the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources. The uptake of renewable energies is hindered by the high cost and safety issues inherent in current battery storage technologies including lithium-ion batteries. By exploring high performance and cost-effective cathodes in this project, advanced aluminum-ion batteries will be developed, allowing intermittent renewable energies sources to better compete with fossil fuels by providing reliable power.
