This project aims to develop ultra-high strength bridge cable steel wires with tensile strength over 2100 MPa for Baosteel. The microstructural characteristics and transformation of wire rods and wires during the value chain processing from patenting, cold drawing, hot-dip galvanisation and torsion will be studied by advanced microscopy characterising methodologies. A holistic microstructure-property-strength mechanism understanding of cable wires during the entire manufacturing process will be unravelled, which is significant to advance metal strengthening knowledge and provide the suggestion and key factors to improve the current cable wire quality and further achieve ultra-high strength over 2100 MPa.
