Magnesium alloys are lightweight and have high damping capacity and resistance to impact damage. Hence, they are ideal for fabricating automotive wheels that can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission and enhance vehicle comfortability and safety. The wider usage of Mg wheels is currently restricted by higher-cost and lower mechanical properties of the only two commercial forging alloys available, and the lack of knowledge base for forged Mg alloys. This project aims to address these critical issues. The expected outcomes include some novel forging Mg alloys with lower-cost, better forgeability and better mechanical properties, together with sufficient durability.
